Music is one of the art forms that is unintelligibly appreciated by the masses. One needn’t learn lyrics or pay rapt attention in order to be able to sing along to a song he heard once when in a bus or from a TV commercial. I am yet to meet an individual who is irked by the sound of all kinds of music. Our favorite songs may however come to ruin when visualized. Forced acting, poor choice of locations, inept dance moves or simply dreadful ideas can lead to a poor music video.
In our music space, out of the many Music Video Directors doing their thing is a young man making strides. A young man using the little he has to improve what we have as an entertainment industry. Unorthodox Reviews met up with this young man during the weekend to find out more about his line of work and his future endeavors.
“I started shooting in 2009 when I got my first digital camera. I used to shoot videos of myself with the camera on a tripod, edit them and show to my friends at school”
It is without a doubt an arduous task to transition from making videos to entertain your friends to taking it up as a job to earn a living. For Mickey Johnson, it seems to have happened quite naturally. Mickey Johnson AKA “The Youngest Director” is a 19-year-old student at Wisconsin University studying Human Resource. After getting his first digital camera, he explored his hidden interest for photography, which later led to his interest for motion graphics.
Mickey, who admires the work of Colin Tilley, has dynamic approaches to finding a concept for a music video. In his own words, “I always want to evaporate something visually eye popping and mind blowing.” He derives his inspiration from all things artistic and has a drive to create new things. “There is a great feeling accompanied with making a thought a reality.” On the local scene, he pinpoints Clarence Peters and Godfather Productions as the Music Video Directors he looks up to. He is of the belief that Video Production in Ghana is moving forward even though we as a country are way behind. He believes with time and hard work we will get there
Although Mickey really enjoys what he does for a living, he however does not just agree to work with artistes upon proposal. He first has to critically listen to the song they want to work with. If it’s good, work can begin.
Mickey has embarked on a new TV show project titled Teenagers. The inspiration behind this project is to help and educate adolescents on their reproductive health. “There are a lot of teenagers making wrong decisions and with this project, I think they can be corrected.”
Having worked with a few distinguished names such as Frenchkiss DJ, Mr. Eazi, Eugy, Lil Shaker, Adomaa, Eyshun and Atom, Mickey in conjunction with his team (Picplus Entertainment) are working on a number of future projects and believe me when I say they are set to set the entertainment industry on fire.
