LUKAY WA LEHIPI BREAKS DOWN HIS MUSICAL JOURNEY

Real name Lucas Lobakeng Mashishi, Lukay is a Pretoria Hip Hop artist/producer who was born and grew up in Unit D Temba Hammanskraal located north of Pretoria. He first started his school years in a local primary school named Mmamotsethen went off to finish the rest of his Primary education at Valhalla Primary School. He then proceeded to finish to do his high school at PTHS (Pretoria Technical High School).

For most of his life his always been a participant in sport activities mainly athletics,cricket,basketball but his love for soccer dominated, which led to him playing numerous local soccer teams and captained most of them.
In the background he steadily pursued music and was heavily influenced by listening to the likes of Eminem , Dmx, Busta Rhymes and localy Skwatta Camp during his early stages of venturing into the rap game. What motivated him to push even more were the local Hip Hop and poetry sessions that were hosted in his hometown.

The biggest moment that happened that impacted heavily in his music journe was back in 2006 while he was doing matric and got the ‘Morafe Maru A Pula’ album from a friend, a Hip Hop Motswako group from Mafikeng which changed his musical writing skill from not only writing English but also focusing in his home language which is Setswana.
In 2007 he moved to Johannesburg to study Industrial Engineering at the University of Johannesburg, it was there where he decided to take his musical talent seriously taking a beat from a group in his hometown by the name Def Rawkas and made a free style out of it which he went to Jam Alley with it in 2009 and took first place, voted by Gangs of Instrumental.
Later that year he met a Producer in his home town by the name Dj Java and recorded his first ever song titled “Moving up”, then joined DEE UNIT PRODUCTION which DJ Java co-owned with his brother Danzo .Being in Johannesburg he would perform in events around the citywith a former member from his first crew titled Noizy Boys and also appeared on a show on YFM titled ‘Airbourne’ hosted by Tumelo “Geno” Ruele and Bonang Matheba.

In December of 2009 he moved to Pretoria, recorded a song that was to elevate his musical success titled Bounce Sakanyana which became a smash hit from 2010 buzzing around his town topping local radio charts.
The music video was shot for the song in 2010 which was to later be shot again in 2011.It was in 2011 when he released his first project which was a mixtape titled ‘DLALA KA LEFOKO’ that featured artists from around Pretoria and as far as Taung which was downloadable for free on the net and also a physical copy was available to buy.

He then created a Hip Hop event named VERBAL NITES which saw Artists from around Pretoria coming to perform and was welcomed by the audience.Throughout the years Lukay has been perform in gigs, school concerts, mall openings and become has a household name around his hometown, 2012 he made it the top5 finalist of the Paco Rabanne Rockster music competition.
