Ovye is a 23 years old self-trained indie experimental music artist raised in Kaduna state, Nigeria, and presently based in Lagos state, Nigeria. The EP Ketchup On Everything is the artist’s first body of work, composed of seven dutifully crafted songs written and sung in English, Hausa and Pidgin, and sung in a style influenced by genres ranging from soft rock to Hausa music to hip hop to spoken word. All seven songs were produced by Duktor Sett.
The project is about a struggle to sustain sanity while managing a feeling of being stuck (literally and figuratively) and spots cover art which attempts to satirize the banality of judgment, books, and covers; showing a character presented as a hooligan wielding a corn knob.
Ovye fingered Beth Hart, JP Cooper, Hugh Masekela, Samthing Soweto, and Son Lux as some of his artistic and musical influences. Ovye is confident in himself as an artist, and takes pride in his Nigerian heritage. Speaking to Unorthodox Reviews, the budding artiste declared: “I am well aware we have more sounds to offer than we have offered the world. This EP is a statement of my belief in that fact.”
