10 QUESTIONS: Indigo Saint

By  |

Who are you?

I’m Indigo Saint. I’m an artist, a novice sound engineer and a singer/songwriter. I’m from the North, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

What are your earlier memories of music?

Playing records with my dad at my Gran’s place. That was like 96/97? I think that was the first time I actually got sucked in. Vinyls of the Jackson 5 and Queen, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

Where do you get your inspirations from?

By far my biggest inspirations stem from pain and loss. I always use my music to get past things. I can be a very dark person. Or at least it might look like it but truth is, I just write things as I see and feel them.

Why Hip Hop?

Because it’s about spreading messages and energies. Hip hop is pop culture now. It’s been actually. Some things need to be said and the only way those things will be easily consumed it seems, is through the music we make. So that’s why hip hop chose me.

What can we expect from you in the near future?

I just did my second #IndigoFebruary last month. And those were cutaways from my Album. So I’m going to be working on packaging my album. And visuals. We’re all about visuals over the next couple of months. And yeah, I’m going to be sharing some work from other artists I work with, like Gama, Staka, 7PMinByo. And yeah, can’t give away everything just yet.

What makes your artistry different from the rest?

The cliche thing to say would be I don’t do this for myself. But that would be a lie. I do. If I can’t do it for myself first, how can I do it for someone else? I don’t know, there are plenty things I see in hip hop that don’t sit right with me, like the materialistic aspect of the game, and how we objectify women, but maybe that’s coz I’m still on a come up? I dont know.

Do you have any goals with your style of music?

Plenty. I still want to get our families talking about things as real as mental health. To get young people talking about their civic duties. To educate my brothers about misogyny. There’s quite a bit.

Who would you like to work with in the near future?

Khae. She’s dope! HMZ and Seru The Ellipsis. Una Rāms too. For now.

Any other interests outside of music?

Yeah, coding and tech. I’m a little bit of a nerd. I found a new love for film so I might take a Master Class on directing, never know when that will come in handy. I’m trying to learn a little about high fashion and art too.

Music over everything or do you believe in a backup plan?

I don’t believe in backup plans. That’s kinda like, leaving Lee way for failing and giving up. Failure is inevitable but giving up isn’t. Also I don’t believe in doing just the one thing. I love other things as much as I love making music. So, yo answer this, Indigo over everything. Stay woke.
