2016 promises to be yet another exciting year for Ghanaian music. A bit over half-way through the year, we’ve been blessed with compilation releases from FOKN Bois, Jayso, C-real etc not to mention the countless of singles making waves. Pundits have already christened 2016 the year of hip hop. They probably jumped the gun if you ask me. Our music scene packs maximum heat when the year draws to a close, with most artistes pulling aces from under their sleeves for ‘shegee reasons’ [award nominations…LOL]. The rest of the year looks unstoppable with comebacks from known acts and debuts from the new school cats. Some are assured of being released, others are purely speculative.
These are the projects we look forward to the most for the rest of 2016.
Cina Soul – Metanoia
The young afro-soul songstress made an entry on the scene and became very popular with ballads- Awo and critically acclaimed Julor which features wordsmith M.anifest [learn more about Cina Soul here]. We were at her album listening weeks ago. Metanoia is set to be officially launched this Saturday, July 23rd. We can’t wait…
C-real – The Reality
Following the success of singles You Don’t Wanna Know and Boss he followed it up with Business Suits X Dress Shoes Vol.1 [check out review here], a 5 track EP which was released on his birthday [July 16th] as a treat to his fans and all hip hop lovers. Sometime last year C-real treated us to Shine which is the first release of his sophomore album. C-real is really going lengths to whet our auditory appetite for The Reality which may drop anytime soon.
DJ Juls – Y.C.O.T [ You Can Only Try]
The British born Ghanaian producer, and BBnZ in-house producer is responsible for most of the production of rising afro-beats star Mr. Eazi. It is rumoured DJ Juls is putting together an album of his own. His recent single release Teef Teef which features Mr. Eazi, Eugy and Sarkodie is apparently the first single off the album.
Omar Sterling – Victory through Harmony
Speculation about a mixtape from R2bees boss Paedae has been in the air ever since he dropped hit single Nineteen Nineties under the moniker Omar Sterling sometime last year. He’s followed it up with a slew of singles; Swag, Banda Flow, Amsterdam Freestyle and Bob Marley. All seemed set for the release of the highly anticipated tape after he announced a change in album name from Critically Acclaimed to Victory through Harmony [with an album art circulating the net and all]. The tape has however delayed for an unknown reason.
Starboy and R2bees albums
Nigerian superstar and boss of Starboy International Worldwide record label Wizkid recently took to twitter to announce the first Starboy album drops this year. This album is speculated to be a collaborative album which contains songs from various acts on the label. Having recently signed Ghanaian heavy weights R2bees, Efya along with Mr. Eazi; this album promises to cause a huge stir.
In the same statement, he also announced the much anticipated R2bees album will also be released this year.
Dblack – LightWork
Another album that has faced delay is Dblack’s LightWork. It had earlier been planned for release on the 12th of January 2016. Due to certain reasons, the album was later set for release on the 1st of May 2016… long story short, we still await the album. The 17-track album spots stellar features from M.I, Phyno, Cassper Nyovest, Pappy Kojo and more.
E.L – Bar 3
Its bar season! Reigning artist of the year doesn’t seem to be resting. He is pulling strings to hit us with the third installment of the hugely successful bar mixtape series [check out BAR I review]. Recent conversations between E.L and Nigerian rap superstar M.I Abaga on twitter has gotten us even more anxious. He recently dropped the single Love God which is apparently the first single off the highly anticipated tape.
Joey B –
After giving us back to back hit singles [Tonga, Wave and Otoolege] over the years, new school lord Joey B is finally set to hit us with his debut album. The first single off the album, U x Me is already a monster tune, enjoying heavy radio rotation.
M.anifest – Nowhere cool
M.anifest has himself described Nowhere Cool as the album he’s been waiting to make his whole career. There is a lot talk about 2016 been a year of hip hop, well M.anifest is the catalyst. He made a huge statement earlier this month with controversial single GodMc which takes subliminal shots at self-acclaimed rap king Sarkodie. He’s successfully captured the ears of his fans and critics alike, the onus now lay on him to confirm his claim with this album – that he is indeed hip hop divinity.
